I have seen the Aurora Australia appearing as if the sky reflected bush fires on the ground. That was at Albury near the Murray River.
I've seen it appear as a rainbow scarf hanging from the heavens. That was at Alice Springs, Central Australia.
I have seen it appear as if the sun were rising over the ocean off the west coast of Australia, an impossibility, as proven an hour later when the sun rose in the east.
I missed this week's Aurora Australis. They aren't common occurrences. That makes the few sightings all the more memorable.
I have been fortunate enough to see three during my lifetime. This recent one looked amazing.
Capturing the glowing swathes of an aurora australis, check out this stunning photo taken on Sunday night by Colin Terry from Blackmans Bay, Tasmania!

The thing is, even with weather forecasts and Aurora predictions they 'just happen' when you least expect it. The times I have seen them I just happen to be out of doors, in the bush, far from the cities ad wide awake at close to 1am or 2 am in the morning. It's no wonder few people get to see them. I don;t often wonder around in the dark in the bush between 1 and 2 am o the odd chance that once in 22 years I'll see the Aurora.
