I add thickly sliced tomato and fresh greens from my garden
I make the coffee, trim the bacon of excess fat and cook it and an egg on a lightly oiled pan for several minutes. Then I season these with freshly ground pepper and place between two thick slices of fresh wholegrain bread.
Still in my night clothes, I take my coffee and bacon and egg sandwich into the home produce garden. Stroll around, selecting whatever I fancy in the way go salad additions, a few chives, some parsley, a nasturtium leaf and some fresh lettuce leaves.
Sit and enjoy in the early morning sunshine.
Vitamin D is essential for bone health, and it aids the absorption of bone-building calcium from the intestine, Vitamin D also helps to control calcium levels in the blood which is used by all our muscles, especially the heart.
Vitamin D and sunshine
For most Australians, sunshine will provide most of our vitamin D.
Vitamin D is produced when our skin is exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) light emitted by the sun. The amount of sun exposure required to produce adequate levels vitamin D is relatively low. However, many Australians do not have adequate vitamin D levels, especially during winter. Roll up your sleeves and learn about the right time of day when it is safe to expose your bare skin to the sun.
In our fear of getting skin cancer we are developing Vitamin D deficiencies. Safe exposure will depend on the season, location, area of skin exposed and skin type.
In summer, exposure is best at mid-morning or mid-afternoon (outside peak UV times). In winter, longer exposure times are needed, preferably around midday.
