Reg and I adore Brolgas we saw them a few times during our recent holiday in Queensland, these are grazing in the harvested stubble of a sunflower crop in the Central region of Queensland.
I have enjoyed painting these birds, they are much loved when they visit in small numbers but can be ruthless if they arrive in many family groupings to attack a sunflower crop before harvest. After devastating a magnificent crop of sunflowers these beautiful birds need to be thankful they are protected species even considered endangered in Victoria.
The Brolga (Grus rubicunda), is from the crane family. It is a noisy bird and performs an intricate mating dance. It is the official bird emblem of Queensland.
