One of the things that most people mention following a visit to far north Queensland is the butterflies.
The Ulysses Butterfly Papilio ulysses hides a beautiful secret in expert camouflage. While stationary on a branch if closes it's wings to merge with the shaddows of the rainforest.
The best place to see butterflies in Australia is the lowlands of the tropics, in the Daintree, especially in the hotter and wetter times of the year. More accessible for the gray nomad traveler is the Cassowary Coast and Atherton Tablelands. It is in the rainforests of these areas where we have seen the beautiful Ulysses Butterfly.
It is difficult to capture a shot of the Ulysses Butterfly in flight. It is disguised against the bright blue sky. I have only witnessed the open blue wings as it was about to land. By the time I lifted my camera the Ulysses had slammed its wings shut.
