Out with the pruning shears to encourage more dense growth for spring and the bird breeding season. :-).
Reg hard-pruned my lanky wallflowers today as our fairy wren family love to dart through it and feed beneath it in springtime and I like it to be dense, being on the ground, to afford them some protection from cats in the area.
For some reason those cats will not push into my dense wallflower clumps and the little birds thrive in there. They also live in the maple tree and my red climbing rose. They feed on insects so don't need native plant species to survive. The small birds are the most vulnerable to predators so we need dense low growing plants.
