This is the Eastern Swamphen. It is a shy bird that has become endangered in some areas. I painted swamp hen in the Jells Park mural, while guiding four hundred children to paint other aspects of the work.
You can see if you ever visit the Jells Park Primary School in Victoria. Walk quietly around the lake at Jells park and you will see them. They are often visible on the island in the lake I visit in the Goulburn Valley.
EASTERN SWAMPHEN (Porphyrio porphyrio)

A large, brightly coloured black and blue bird with a large red bill and a large red frontal shield.
This bird inhabits swampy grassy areas.
