I am fortunate to live on the land that is traditional country to the Bangerang people from the Yorta Yorta Abroriginal clan.
The wattle is coming into bloom and there will be no holding me back now I have my Valoped Treck walker, my camera and writing kit in my bag. I am interested in learning more of the traditional land managment and wildlife preservation from the traditional owners of this country. I'm also keen to explore more of the natural unspoilt bushland of the area.
This is Yorta Yorta country.
The Yorta Yorta Aboriginal language is spoken by all the Yorta Yorta clans, including the Kaitheban, Wollithiga, Moira, Ulupna, Bangerang, Kwat Kwat, Yalaba Yalaba and Ngurai-illiam-wurrung clans.
This is the map of land area claimed for Native Title Land as Traditional Yorta Yorta Territory.
Some degree of combined management was granted to some of the forests and rivers.
The traditional Yorta Yorta lands lie on both sides of the Murray River roughly from Cohuna to Albury / Wodonga. They include towns such as Echuca, Shepparton, Benalla, Corowa and Wangaratta and extend northwards to just south of Deniliquin.
Yorta Yorta Traditional tribal lands, covers some 20,000 square kilometers.
Currently the Yorta Yorta people are engaged in combined management along the Murray River and they work on many projects of community benefit.
They strive to educate others on how to save the endangered fresh water turtle, and teach about traditional knowledge of climate change.
It is important to all Australians that we learn from our traditional land owners, they have a long time record f caring for our land. Let's not lose the knowledge.
