Just a short drive from Shepparton, is the pretty town of Murchison, once home to a tribe of 200 Aboriginals before they were devastated by European settlement. This town has many peak activities from paddle steamers and hotels servicing the passing gold rush community to a police staging post in the hunt for the bush ranger Ned Kelly, then a huge internment camp during WW2. Murchison made news in my lifetime as the site of a spectacular meteorite shower.
A quiet rural town now with dairy and wine the main industries in the area.
Murchison is situated on one of the loveliest stretches of the Goulburn River and is an interesting rural mix of the old and the new. I always enjoy a walk along the Goulburn River at Murchison.
