The Otways, as they are lovingly called, were once the preferred scenic route to drive between Melbourne and Adelaide in South Australia.
I cannot go there now. I wish to retain my memories of vistas to the ocean and not roads enclosed in pine forest. I fear that under the current government that might be the fate of some of the Tasmanian wilderness.
The Otways were on their way to Bioregional Ecological Extinctions until laws were passed to stop logging of natural rain forest there in 2008. I am pleased that the Great Otway National Park, also called The Otways or the Otway Ranges, still exists in Victoria (Australia), 162 km southwest of Melbourne. It is, however, no longer the scenic route to Adelaide as I remember it. It is a drive of regret for lost beauty, as I pass through the pine plantations that block much of the scenic vista. I am enjoying the Otways it today from photo images. My Otways, that I loved, will be kept pristine in my memories. No amount of construction of tree top walks can remove the destruction that has been done to the Otways. My heartfelt priase to those conservationists who have halted the destruction.
If you drive to the Otways from Melbourne via the Princes Highway and Colac you see landscape cleared by Australia’s colonial ancestors and realise that without conservation campaign, this is what would happen in the Otways. Red woods in the Otways, above. Please explain to me why they bulldozed this camp and have let wild berries take over the area when campers where doing such a good job of keeping it clean.
