Queen Mary 2 will sail out of Sydney today on her historic New Zealand circumnavigation with remarkable Captain Cook items from the State Library of New South Wales, collection.
The items include personal possessions the master navigator had with him on his 18th century voyages to New Zealand and the South Pacific, including his tea caddy and spoon and handwritten draft journal.
There’s also rare personal letters which give Cook’s first impressions of New Zealand and his thoughts on the first tragic encounter with Maori at Poverty Bay on the very first day.
The items will be displayed in the Queen Mary 2 library and State Library Emeritus Curator, Paul Brunton will give daily talks.
