I don't remember back quite this far. The tea tree hedge was natural, not pruned to this unnatural shape when I knew this spot back in 1954 to 1958 when my family lived in Keys Street Beaumaris.
I remember We walked to the beach along Tramway Parade. We cut across country from tho back of Keys Street and heading toward Half Moon Bay. "Beaumaris Tramway closed in 1915."
Half Moon Bay, Balcombe Park Bushland Reserve, Beaumaris, on the border of Black Rock, receives its name from its crescentic shape of the 350 metres long bay. I had some experiences in that bay, from almost drowning trying to rescue a child's blow-up ball from the rip to being circled by a shark. It is a relatively safe beach despite those incidents
Walking home along Railway Parade, which I remember as predominately an unmade sandy strip with a few last remaining tram tracks, I'd enjoy the scrub, wattle in bloom, wildflowers, and birdlife.
I remember that it was hard to grow plants in the sandy soil' and I was already a keen gardener as a child. I succeeded in growing beans and stocks, both of these like sweet soil. I created a scoria rock garden. The SP Bookmaker (illegal betting on the horse races) would meet his clients in the back alleyway behind our home. If the police raided the lane, the gamblers would leap over the fence and hide in my garden. I'm sure that many of my memories of Beaumaris worked their way into the novels I've written. There would be a huge fire built on a raft and a beach carnival for Guy Faulks Day.
Ah, we had fun. Childhood years spend living near a beach. The natural and historical assets of Beaumaris nurtured me well.
