One in two Australian seniors develop skin cancer at some stage of their life and I am at the stage of getting my annual nip and tuck. At 65 I just got my first skin graft to the nose done and while I'm fine, relaxing under three bandages, one to the forehead, one on the nose and one to the neck where they took the skin graft to go on the nose, I am just fine and pleased that they take care of these slow growing cancers I get, before they become a problem. The majority of skin cancer is slow growing and nothing to worry about if you get them taken care of.
An annual skin check or six monthly if in a high risk group, is a good idea, along with some regular mild conditions, sun exposure. It is best to avoid intermittent sun exposure as that places you at higher risk of skin cancer than a regular small dose of sunshine on a daily basis. It is those who get sun exposure only on weekends or holiday time who fall into the highest skin cancer risk, along with blonds and redheads.
I always wear a wide brimmed hat in the sun and I am starting to wear a fringe to protect my suitable forehead and high at the neck T shirts as the sun is not kind to a seniors neck.
There needs to be a balance between minimizing excess sun exposure and getting enough Vitamin D, so have your Vitamin D levels checked when you next get your blood tests done and consider taking a Vit D3 supplement to protect your bone density, if it is low.
I try to get regular morning sunshine on my arms and legs to get some natural Vitamin D. It is impossible to overdose on Vit D from sunshine where as with oral supplements you have to watch you do not overdose.
Take care this summer not to burn and enjoy the balance of enough sun to get your Vitamin D but not enough to do you harm.
