I've been reading many articles overnight, about Durkheim. He made the positive comment that we can make a difference. His message was a positive one. We can all make a positive impact on other people’s lives and lower their risk of suicide.
He helped identify high risk factors and to make people aware of how their actions impact on others. He saw suicide prevention as the concern of corporations, governments, communities, neighbours, friends and family. Everyone has an impact on the lives of others. His message was a positive one. That was can make a positive impact.
Now, I’m going to further this discussion in a personal way, yet tied it into Durkheim’s findings. Last year at this time, I was engrossed in … never mind, that’s just an excuse for my not noticing or making any enquiries nobody was visiting the widow who lived two doors down from me, over Christmas. People got busy. The man who usually called to take her shopping didn’t come. Her children were too busy that Christmas to make their annual visit. None of the neighbours checked on her. We didn’t know she had no food in the fridge on Christmas day and everyone else celebrating Christmas with family and friends was all too much for her to cope with…
That is Durkheim’s message. We can make a positive impact on someone. He has pointed out the high-risk situations and times. Keep an eye on the lonely widower or widow or that homeless kid you’ve seen in your area, this festive season. That’s the purpose of all of Durkheim’s work, to get a caring nurturing mentality toward suicide prevention happening on all levels.
