The usually dry riverbed in Alcie Springs is flowing again.
Weather bureau forecaster Angeline Prasad says the rain will continue in the Alice Springs district until at least Sunday.
She says the heaviest rainfalls have been to the north of Alice Springs.
"We have cancelled the severe weather warning for the township of Alice Springs," she said.
Police have closed several river crossings.
Acting Senior Sergeant Dean Barrett says residents should take care.
"We ask them to keep out of the water, and obviously keep their children and dogs out of the water," he said.
The Stuart Highway at Aileron, about 150 kilometres north of Alice Springs, has been reopened to traffic after being closed overnight.
The Department of Construction and Infrastructure says the Lasseter Highway is now clear and Luritja Road to Kings Canyon is passable.
Roads and Planning manager Glen Auricht says all bush roads and some highways are still closed.
"Ross Highway, we still have that closed," he said.
"We are assessing all the floodways, and silt and debris that may have washed down overnight.
"It is going to be unfortunate for a lot of the bush communities, with all the roads closed to the remote areas."
The weather bureau says some areas east of Alice Spring have had more than 250 millimetres of rain in the last week.
