Explore the wild and wonderful as parks re-open for Easter
If you are looking for wild, rugged beauty or somewhere interesting to take the kids over Easter, why not get in touch with nature at Werribee Gorge, or step back in time at Steiglitz Historic Park.
These are just two of the state, national or heritage parks, only a short drive west of Melbourne, that offer the opportunity to experience spectacular views, abundant flora and fauna or a history lesson.
Parks Victoria Ranger in Charge, Peter Box said rangers are pleased to be able to re-open the parks in time for Easter following damage in some areas caused by ongoing heavy rains.
“All areas, including The Circuit and River Walks at Werribee Gorge are now open, along with all walking tracks at Lerderderg State Park,” said Mr Box.
“Most walking tracks at Brisbane Ranges are accessible and we are confident of opening more before Easter if the weather holds.
“This is a great time for people to enjoy the tremendous boost our parks have received from the additional rains.
“Rivers and creeks are flowing in autumn for the first time in years and the lush growth on plants looks amazing. There is an abundance of wildlife including echidnas, koalas and wallabies.”
If you enjoy a relaxing picnic, fishing, bushwalking or a scramble over the rocks of The Great Dividing Range there is an outdoor activity to suit everyone.
Parks Victoria has worked hard to clear tracks and repair bridges to re-open the parks. Rangers are urging people to exercise caution as walking tracks may be wet after rain. Visitors are encouraged to stay on formed tracks and beware of fallen trees.
For those with an interest in history, Steiglitz Historic Park is situated between Geelong and Ballarat. The park resembles a historic town with a fascinating look into the heights of the gold rush, scattered amongst the existing township.
Visitors can try their hand gold panning at nearby Sutherland Creek (permit required) and the Courthouse is open between 1pm ‑ 4pm on Sundays.
“I urge you to take this opportunity to get out and explore your local parks over the Easter break. To make the most of your trip, please check local conditions and plan ahead to find out the best places to go,” said Mr Box.
