From the Gray Nomad Travel Diary

The paved Rainforest Walk at the junction of the Bemm and McKenzie rivers took us through a rainforest river valley, with markers along the way telling the story of the secrets of survival and the creatures the forest.

Reg and I heard the sounds of a lyrebird, mimicking other birds and twigs breaking. We saw many native birds in the scrub.
Today’s exercise consisted of hiking through two beautiful rain forest walks in the forests of south east Gippsland, carrying Indigo, our poodle for most of the way.

The swing bridges over the McKenzie River and through the gnarled trees added a different dimension to the rain forest experience. The steps gave me some additional exercise variety.

If you are and seeking a place to stay overnight nearby, I've been told it is about 30-minutes away from Cape Conran which has Banksia Bluff camp sites and cabins for hire.

Dogs are permitted in the reserve but must be kept on a leash and under control at all times. Our indigo found the trail difficult as it was covered with branches and leaf litter, so I carried her most of the way, happy to add a little extra exercise effort to these beautiful walks over the McKenzie River via swing bridges enjoying views of the magnificence forest canopy.

Precautions:
The walk wasn't suitable for wheelchair access on the day we visited.

Remember to check weather conditions or if the park is closed for maintenance before you go as the bridges and boardwalk in the scenic reserve are subject to flooding.  Today was a beautiful day, but you could see that one of the trails was often under water.
Location: Bemm River Scenic Reserve
Distance: 1km return
Duration: 45 minutes
Grade: Level 2 – No experience required. The track is hardened gravel or compacted surface and may have a gentle hill section or sections and some steps. Walks up to 10km.
Start: Rainforest Walk picnic area with toilets.
Finish: Rainforest Walk picnic area
Getting there: The Bemm River Scenic Reserve is 30km west of Cann River and 45km east of Orbost. Signposting on Princes Highway(A1) gives directions to an all-weather gravel access road to the walk and parking area.

We are in the region half way between Melbourne and Sydney now, near the Australian Capital Territory and many of the cars in the vicinity are ACT cars and those of international tourists and the car park was large enough to easily park our caravan.
The walk is a 1km loop and consists of a sealed pathway, boardwalks and two swing bridges over the picturesque McKenzie River, providing visitors with the opportunity to view the magnificent surrounding riparian forest within the canopy It will take about 45 minutes to complete at a relaxed pace.
Information boards along the walk provide information into the forest and the species it protects which help shape this significant area.
Not recommended for wheelchair access.

More great places to visit in Victoria Australia.

Traveling gives me insights into the lives of rural people, and the country I write about in Ryn's Rural-Lit novels and my painting inspiration.
