Painting my way through the Great Green Way

The Cassowary Coast is that area of north Queensland between Babinda in the north and Cardwell in the south.  Some of the towns in this region are Miriwinni, Innisfail, Mena Creek, Kurrimine Beach, Mission Beach and Tully.  This area also includes The Canecutter Way through the hinterland.

Some references say that the entire coastline from Townsville to Cairns is the Cassowary Coast. I am not an expert in this matter; however, for this book, I’ll restrict the area I cover to the narrower interpretation of the Cassowary Coast.

Even within this region I’m choosing to cover, this eBook is not a complete guide to the Cassowary Coast and hinterland, as such a book would be impossible to produce.

This is the Cassowary Coast and hinterland experience of gray nomad travelers Reg and Kathy Shell and travel companion dog Indigo touring in a caravan and using a caravan park on the coast as our base for day tours.

This region is beautiful and diverse. This is just one of many travel adventures of Australian gray nomads Reg and Ryn Shell and their dog Indigo.

Cassowary

The Johnstone Shire contains the oldest tropical rainforest on earth. There are more primitive plants and animals here than anywhere else on earth.

The cassowary bird, after which the coast was named, is itself a wonder and an example of the need to preserve the area as a living museum.

Avoiding the possibility of jeopardising wildlife is another reason that domestic pets should never be allowed unrestrained in wilderness regions. Pets and wildlife do not belong together.

The forest is formed from ancient specimens of king ferns, cycads and Kauri pines which evolved over two hundred million years ago. Over half of the world’s primitive flowering plant families are found in the Johnstone Shire.
