The green of tropical Katherine Hot Springs

Whenever we visit Katherine in the Northers Territory, we stay for at least a month to enjoy the  "Hot Springs."

The hot springs are more accurately warm springs at an average temperature of 32C. They are tucked away alongside the Katherine River near the Victoria Highway in Katherine. Both tourists and locals enjoy them during the dry season.

The Katherine Town Council maintains the pool and walking tracks along the Katherine River corridor. They improved the main pool by adding a gravel bed to keep the sediment disturbance down. As a result, dry season visitors enjoy the crystal clear water.
 
The area was once a hole beside the river bed. The current development is a well planned man-made development created in harmony with the natural surrounds. There are walks in the area and information signs. Tourists can stand on a viewing platform and look down to see the source of the spring water.  We walked along the well-constructed path to follow the stream to the walkway/bridge and the main pool. 

I love that the main pool has wheelchair access. Stainless steel rails are inserted into the natural rock walls.  

Pandanus line the pool. The stream flows over a retaining wall that acts as a small waterfall, allowing water to flow over into a plunge pool. That was the area my husband loved the most. The pool is an exhilarating spa of moving bubbling water.

Below that, the stream meanders amongst the paperbark trees and out into the Katherine River 30 Metres away.

On the banks above the hot springs, there are grassy lawns for sunbathing areas and well-shaded rest areas.

Every wet season, the Katherine hot springs go fourteen to sixteen metres underwater. 

If you  feel like stretching your legs, there is a walking/ bike path along the river bed, through the River Red Gums and  Ghost Gums until you reach the ​Katherine Low level Nature Reserve.  This is a popular swimming and scenic spot.
